The appropriate treatment depends on the paper, binding, and condition. Our goal is to make the volume usable while respecting what can be preserved.

A new chapter

A deteriorated glossy-paper textbook binding replaced with archival boards and durable book cloth, new endpapers, headbands, and a labeled spine.

Materials and the extent of the work are discussed during a consultation, with attention to inscriptions, ownership marks, and other evidence of a book’s past.

Protection by design

For this structurally stable antiquarian volume, a fitted cloth-covered clamshell provides protection while preserving the original binding.

Sometimes protection is the best intervention. An enclosure can reduce handling wear without altering the volume itself.

Color, carefully renewed.

Faded, water-damaged book cloth received color restoration. These photographs show the cover before and after treatment, with the original cloth and its signs of age retained.

Four volumes, kept together.

This four-volume set of Dmitri Mendeleev’s chemistry works needed structural hinge repairs before a protective enclosure could be made. A fitted slipcase covered in durable book cloth and individually labeled spines complete the project.
